Here at Osgodby Gundogs we have used our design of Whelping and Puppy House for over three years successfully rearing a number of litters of both Labradors and English Springer Spaniels. We currently have three houses in use which are erected as and when required. As each house is of a modular design it can be easily taken apart when not required, cleaned and stored in a convenient place. The largest litter of puppies to be housed in one of our Whelping and Puppy House numbered 13 Labrador puppies and of course mum. The house is used by the litter from birth to the time they go to their new homes. In the initial weeks a small lower door panel was used (not shown in the illustration) to prevent the puppies from escaping whilst still allowing free access for mum, however from about 3 weeks the lower door is permanently removed to allow free access into their run area.
We have found that these houses offer a highly controllable environment. In their basic configuration, as shown above, they are virtually draft proof, however drafts are almost eliminated by the inclusion of a blanket covering the door. All our houses have the electric light kit fitted. Again we have found that with the door blanket fitted a 60watt bulb will heat the house to approximately 20 degrees C.
The Whelping and Puppy Houses are virtually maintenance free. Apart from the daily clean all they require is a disinfect and maybe a pressure wash prior to storage. We have found that the waterproof membrane can become damaged with some litters. If this happens a new membrane can be easily fitted.
Constructed from 6mm plywood fixed to a wood frame ensures robustness and longevity. The base has a waterproof membrane fixed to it and benefits from 25mm polystyrene insulation for puppy comfort. All the interior walls are varnished for easy cleaning. All fitting nuts and bolts are included.
